Derek

Derek has been with us for three weeks now. He has been doing extremely well. He’s gotten along with the two resident females here and has been friendly towards the people he’s met. He loves to go for walks and does extremely well on the leash. He loves his people and wants to be near them. He has not been left alone much as his foster mom works from home, but has been left to free roam a couple of times. He did well but did eat a loaf of bread. He likes to play with toys but can get rough trying to get them if they are in your hand. He jumps at them and has almost knocked us down. We are working on it. He’s potty trained and we did keep him in a crate at night at first and for brief periods when he first came to us and he did fine. He still eats in his crate.
This week he was neutered and while he was under had a couple of bumps removed. One was on his head and one on his right shoulder. We are waiting on the results of the biopsies and keeping our fingers crossed they come back benign. He is doing well after the procedures. There was good news. He is heartworm negative!! So in a couple weeks after all of his incisions have healed, he will be ready for his forever home.
He will need:
- Someone who is home most of the time. He loves his people and wants to be near them at all times.
- Someone who will walk him daily.
- Another dog isn’t a must, but he does like the company of his foster sisters. He’s not been around male dogs, so I’m not sure how he would be.
- No kids or older kids (teenagers) just because of the toy lunging. He could hurt little kids going after a toy. It would not be intentional, but could happen.
- Fenced in yard, preferably 6’
Background – July 11, 2025:
Mr Derek came in as a stray. Sadly, like so many others, never recognized or reclaimed.
He struggled in the shelter environment and needed out. Loves everyone, just hated being alone. We had an amazing foster who stepped up to give him what he needed. We broke him out of the overcrowded shelter, and now he has a chance at a happy, healthy life!
